The Piano Man’s Last Song

Tucked away in a secluded northwoods retreat, Doug McGee works on his babies.

He used to operate on others’ too, but as pianomakers such as Steinway and Yamaha begin offering digital player piano systems to replace the mechanical ones he loves, the collector and repairman has been wrestling with the ultimate existential question: Am I still relevant?

Armed with a drone, a Dana Dolly, a few cameras, some vintage Leica lenses and a grip truck, our crew dug in to tell Doug’s story in a stylized documentary manner.
